TMJ and Bruxism

The Temporomandibular Joint (commonly abbreviated to TMJ) is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull allowing your jaw to move freely so that you can eat, laugh and talk.

Problems with this joint can result in headaches, migraines and facial pain. A misaligned jaw can cause the Temporomandibular Joint to become inflamed, causing muscle spasms which, in turn, tighten the muscles in the face, neck and shoulders. Further, pressure may affect the nerves around the joint causing a shooting pain around the ear and head.

If you're suffering from TMJ symptoms, schedule a consultation at Silas St Dental today. TMJ symptoms are often caused by tooth grinding or Bruxism, which often occurs during sleep, and can be stress-related. Treatment may include:

  • Injecting the clenching muscles of the jaw with muscle relaxants will decrease the stress on your TMJ (temporomandibular joint) by reducing grinding and clenching.
  • Wearing a mouth guard or splint while sleeping. These are custom-made at our practice to fit comfortably around your teeth. The splint helps to minimise the damage (caused by Bruxism or grinding) to both the teeth and the TMJ.
  • Relaxation techniques and meditation may be implemented into your daily routine to alleviate everyday stress levels.
  • Physical therapy stretching exercises can be done daily to restore natural movements to the muscles and joints surrounding the jaw.
  • New fillings, crowns or orthodontics can correct an uneven bite which may be causing Bruxism. Damaged teeth may also be restored.
